Supermicro IPMI Key Generator (X9 & X10)
Enter the MAC address of the board’s IPMI/BMC interface (not the host NIC). Colons, dashes, spaces and lowercase are all fine. The key is calculated locally in your browser.
Paste the six groups into the licence activation form in the IPMI web interface.
Where to find the IPMI MAC address
Section titled “Where to find the IPMI MAC address”- In the IPMI web interface, under Configuration → Network.
- On the sticker on the motherboard, usually labelled IPMI MAC or BMC MAC.
- From the host OS with
ipmitool lan print.
Supported boards
Section titled “Supported boards”The same key works on X9 and X10 generation boards, because both use the same algorithm and secret. Other generations aren’t covered here.
How the key is generated
Section titled “How the key is generated”The key is the first 12 bytes (24 hex characters) of an HMAC-SHA1 of the MAC address, using a fixed secret (8544E3B47ECA58F9583043F8), split into six groups of four characters.
This is based on Peter Kleissner’s reverse engineering of the Supermicro IPMI licence. If you want a command-line version, Bernd Wachter’s supermicro-ipmi-key Perl script uses the same method:
